Vizhinjam port eyes 40% EXIM share in total cargo volumes over 3-5 years
Vizhinjam International Seaport, the country’s first deepwater transshipment port, is rapidly scaling up infrastructure to commence direct export-import (EXIM) operations, aiming to achieve a 40:60 mix between EXIM and transshipment cargo volumes over the next three to five years.
Vizhinjam port plans ₹10,000-crore outlay on expansion starting September
The Adani Group-run Vizhinjam International Deepwater Multipurpose Seaport, the country’s first dedicated container trans-shipment port, has achieved full capacity utilisation of 1.2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) handling over a lakh container a month, in its first year of operations. There is now an urgency to expand the infrastructure with an investment around ₹10,000 crore planned, a company spokesperson said.

Kottayam Port and Container Terminal — India’s first inland container depot (ICD) — is looking at developing inland water connectivity with Vizhinjam Port to facilitate cargo transshipment. The proposal received a positive response from the Kerala government and port authorities held preliminary discussions with the Customs Commissioner, expressing confidence that there would be movement of at least 30 TEUs per day to Vizhinjam Port.
